Choral Workshop-Birmingham Town Hall- in June 2011

Making Music in the West Midlands has booked Birmingham Town Hall on June 26th 2011 for a Workshop performance of Mendelssohn's Elijah.  The Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Michael Lloyd, will be appearing and it is hoped that as many choral members from the West Midlands as possible will be involved. Watch this space for further information as it becomes available later this year.

Mendelssohn originally composed the work to a German text by his friend Karl Klingemann, who earlier had provided him with the libretto for his comic operetta Die Heimkehr aus der Fremde. Upon being commissioned by the Birmingham Festival to write an oratorio, however, Mendelssohn had the libretto translated into English by William Bartholomew, and the oratorio was premiered in the English version. The first performance was given in 1846 at the Birmingham Town Hall.
